With 2020 making foreign holidays a little difficult, we decided on a staycation instead. We booked a house for the week, rented a car and took a drive to Sedgwick in the Lake District.
The beautiful house we rented was in the small village of Sedgwick near Kendal and lake Windermere. On the first day we had to explore, we took a short drive into Kendal to see if we could find any mint cake.
It’s a lovely little town, with a castle to explore and plenty of pretty walks to take along the river.
The main reason I wanted to visit the Lake District was to see Lake Windermere. I’d heard it was one of the most beautiful places in England and I was excited to see for myself! While the weather wasn’t perfect, I was by no means disappointed!
I managed to get my drone in the sky for an aerial view.
On one of the wetter days we decided to head to the Jetty Museum to discover the history of the lakes and stay slightly drier. The museum is relatively new and is in a beautiful new building, which is worth the entry price alone. There’s also some beautiful old boats and a really interesting restoration yard where experts and volunteers work on bringing old boats back to their former splendour.
It’s impossible to stay so close to Lake Windermere and only visit it once. So we booked onto a boat trip from Newby Bridge to Ambleside. It was probably the best weather we had during our time in the Lake District, which really showed the full beauty of Windermere.
We were in the area for a week but it felt like we left with so much still to do and see. I can see why so many people go back to explore the Lake District regularly. One visit just isn’t enough and we’ll be back soon.
